As soon as Linghu Chong entered Huiyan Tower, he heard Yi Qing and Tian Boguang’s voices. Tian Boguang was forcing Yi Qing to drink alcohol and eat meat, but Yi Qing, being a Buddhist disciple, naturally refused.
The name Yi Qing implies elegance, extraordinary appearance, knowledge and reason, and moral integrity.
The character 仪 means: dignified bearing, elegant demeanor, proper conduct, and manners; the character 清 implies: understanding, integrity, and purity.
In the original novel, although Yilin was more talented and more beautiful, and eventually killed Yue Buqun to avenge her master, Linghu Chong ultimately passed the position of Hengshan Sect Leader to Yiqing, rather than Yilin, with whom he had a closer and more intimate relationship.
Because she was indeed the best candidate for the position of sect leader; Jin Yong also gave many hints in the book, in short: details determine success or failure.
First, Yi Qing has a strong sense of the big picture.
Among the other disciples of the Hengshan Sect, Yilin is beautiful but not cut out to be the sect leader; Yihe is irritable, unreasonable, and difficult to approach; Zheng E is a lay disciple of Hengshan, and while she speaks wittily, she misses the point; Qin Juan is clever, but too young and lacks experience in the martial world.
While in Fujian, they received a letter from Abbess Dingxian pleading for help. Yi and the others rushed to rescue their sect leader. At this time, Yi Qing, assessing the situation, decided to ask Yue Buqun, the leader of the Huashan Sect, and others for help in the name of “the Five Mountains Sword Sects are of one mind and one branch”. Yue Buqun, that old fox, after weighing the pros and cons, refused to help the Hengshan Sect.
After Yue Buqun refused, Yi He, Yi Zhen, and the others acted rudely, disregarding seniority and social hierarchy; only Yi Qing bowed to Yue Buqun and his wife to take her leave, which was polite and respectful, leaving no room for criticism.
Secondly, Yi Qing is gentle, kind, and considerate.
When Linghu Chong disguised himself as a general to save the Hengshan people, Yihe and the others looked down on this dissolute savior; only Yiqing treated him with courtesy from beginning to end; after Linghu Chong was injured, while the others were busy arguing with him, Yiqing was concerned about his injuries.
A kind and visionary leader will prevent infighting among fellow disciples; the decline of the Huashan sect was due to the insistence on a power struggle between the Qi Sect and the Sword Sect.
Thirdly, Yi Qing possessed integrity and moral character.
Comparing them to Yue Buqun shows how important integrity is to a sect; Yi Qing, though a woman with little martial arts skill, righteously declared when the Demonic Sect forced them to kneel before Ren Woxing: “We are monks, we worship Buddha, Bodhisattva, and our master, not mortals.”
His attitude became even tougher afterward: “Kill me if you want. Hengshan disciples do not worship mortals.”
Although Linghu Chong was a carefree wanderer who loved drinking and had little sense of responsibility, he clearly saw what Yi Qing had done, knew about it, and appreciated it. Therefore, he entrusted the Hengshan sect to Yi Qing.
Unlike Yilin, who is very treacherous in the original novel, Yiqing, who is also captured by Tian Boguang, is always outwitting and outmaneuvering Tian Boguang. At crucial moments, she even helps Linghu Chong out of trouble and joins him in arguing with Tian Boguang.
Unfortunately, Tian Boguang was a lecherous thief who committed countless crimes over the years, only caring about his own pleasure and not considering the consequences of his actions, causing countless families to suffer tragic human tragedies because of his deeds.
During his more than ten years of womanizing, he raped at least tens of thousands of women. One-third of them could not bear the humiliation and eventually chose to commit suicide. A considerable number of young ladies and concubines from wealthy families were forced to commit suicide by their families and parents (according to the old custom). In terms of the degree of his crimes, he was not much better than Ye Erniang in Tianlong. He was absolutely an unforgivable scum and a beast.
However, after drinking a few cups with this lecherous scoundrel and becoming acquainted through a fight, Linghu Chong actually developed a sense of mutual respect and sincerely admired him, saying, “What a hero! What excellent swordsmanship!”
Yi Qing was not as beautiful as Yi Lin, though she was not bad-looking, but not enough to make Tian Boguang too infatuated. So, in a rare display of chivalry, he gave Linghu Chong and the Huashan Sword Sect face and let Yi Qing leave.
Yi Qing was not like Yi Lin. She decisively left first and went to the Liu residence, intending to find the Liu family’s experts to capture Tian Boguang, a notorious lecher, and to seek justice for herself and the other poor people who had been persecuted.
Yi Qing could never forget what happened that afternoon, even in her dreams.
”Help…help…no! Don’t do this…don’t do this…”
”Hehehe…beautiful girl, little nun…just submit to me, don’t run away…hehe…don’t run away!”
”No, no… don’t come any closer!”
”Hehe… When a girl says no, she means yes… Little nun, I’ll be very gentle… Don’t worry… I won’t hurt you!”
”I never expected that I, Tian Boguang, would meet such a lovely young lady like you in this desolate wilderness. What good luck… Little nun, tell me, isn’t this a preordained destiny, our fate?”
”Benefactor, you can’t do this… My master will kill you. My master is Abbess Dingyi of the Hengshan Sect. She is very powerful. Don’t come any closer!” Yi Qing, who had never seen such a scene before, was terrified and hoped to use the name of the Hengshan Sect to frighten the lecherous thief in front of her!
But Tian Boguang was not afraid at all, and even mocked with disdain: “Master Dingyi? What is that? Besides, if I can get to kiss my little master, even if I am killed by Master Dingyi in the future, what’s wrong with that? It’s worth it!”
The more Tian Boguang saw Yi Qing resisting, the more itchy he became.
”No…please…let me go. From now on, we’ll eat vegetarian food and worship Buddha every day, praying for your kindness and blessings…”
”Pray? Seek grace and virtue? What would I need that for… Little Master, I only want you.” Tian Boguang said with a wicked grin, his eyes gleaming with lust.
”Tear…”
Yi Qing’s clothes were torn by Tian Boguang. If Linghu Chong hadn’t arrived in time and acted decisively, she would have been killed by him long ago.
These past few days, it was only because Linghu Chong was keeping watch from behind and would intervene from time to time, along with Yi Qing’s own alertness, that she was able to preserve her innocence.
Unlike Yilin, Yiqing harbored a strong desire to kill Tian Boguang. She went directly to the Liu residence and found Ning Zhongze of the Huashan Sword Sect and her own master (it was easier to talk to women). She explained the whole story to everyone in a very direct and clear manner. After changing into new clothes, she led everyone to attack Huiyan Tower.
