“Mom got this question wrong.”

She flipped the draft paper over and pushed it in front of me, pointing to an equation on the third line. The pencil writing was crooked, but each step was numbered.

“In the third and fourth steps, Mom got the plus and minus signs reversed.” She poked the minus sign with the tip of her pencil. “It should be negative 3 plus 5 equals positive 2, but Mom wrote negative 3 minus 5 equals negative 8.”
